Congratulations to our September Featured Coach, Melanie Rickerby.
'Magical Mel has worked with children for 24 years in Schools, Groups, both voluntary and paid work. When working in Primary school 11 years ago she was looking for something to fill a gap in her sessions with children, a form of relaxation. Using relaxation techniques personally, and seeing the chaos in children’s lives and minds, her search began to find that something.
A colleague, at the time, brought me a copy of The Wishing Star Book, which she had found online. I wasn’t looking for relaxations to read as I felt the children needed a role model and to see myself participating alongside them. I had a mixed group of children all with different abilities and each their own needs. The book led me to find the Relax Kids website and WOW! what an array of choice. I spent the evening reading the website over and over but could see that I could not afford the training at the time. I could however, afford to buy all the CDs on offer as I just couldn’t decide which to try. As soon as they arrived I introduced them to the children within my weekly sessions, the benefits were clear even after 2 sessions and the children’s response was just what I had hoped for. It soon developed into a full Relax Kids session as we created artwork and creative writing, alongside the visualisation.
I was closely following the website and a competition for children to write their own story encouraged even more children within the school to get involved. Meanwhile I was frantically saving to do the training, eager to find out more about Relax Kids. I have always been creative and was running creative workshops for children at my Parents Therapy Centre so knew I could not only use Relax Kids in School, but also as a holiday activity.
I trained in 2008 and returned to school buzzing with excitement if what I had learned could help even one child a day then it had all been worthwhile. Working in a fantastic school with open minded teachers everyone was happy for me to run trial sessions and monitor the benefits. By the next School year the headteacher allowed me to implement Relax Kids throughout the whole school, so one day per week I delivered back to back sessions throughout school, from Reception to Year 6. Each Class had their own resources and used the CDs daily, alongside the Star Cards. I was also able to use it as a base for learning within our Nurture Room. I was working part time so also able to offer myself out to other schools and groups.
With over half of the tickets flown for our annual Christmas Ball it looks like we maybe flying towards a sell out yet again .

Magical Mel has private sessions during the morning then open to anyone from 12-3.45 for free fun to put smiles miles. She is also asking on Facebook for people to send her pictures of themselves smiling aiming to gather 200 before 9pm Monday 20th March.
Magical Mel was to become gnomeless as her parents made the decision to sell Hazeldean and therefore went in search of a new venue to run Fairy School and parties from.
Upon approaching Morton Manor she was welcomed with open arms and the decision was made to fly permanently within the Manor. January has seen Magical Mel Transform what used to be the old library into The Room Of Enchantment. Last Sat a Very Important Pixie Event took place where regular customers entered to explore. This Sunday sees a sell-out Grand opening!
The Room of Enchantment is where after school classes,Halfterm workshops and weekend parties will take place throughout the year.
Magical Mel Says “I believe that engaging families in imaginative events encourages their overall wellbeing. That children believing in Fairies enables them to believe in them self. In the chaotic world in which we live children need calm creative time.”
This time last year I had spent the day at Fairy School with children calling to pick their own Fairy Christmas Tree it was a Special day but an awful wet and windy day.I returned home to settle down in preparation for our annual Christmas Ball in the Stunning Ballroom at The Crown and Mitre Carlisle. The gifts were wrapped ,the treats prepared and children all over Cumbria excited to attend.
However the evening got worse, the wind was howling the lights a flickering and the rain flowing, unfortunately a storm was on its way which led to the over spill of rivers ,the gushing of drains and peoples homes under threat.
Not many in the County slept that night, homes and businesses were flooded,Christmas taken and hearts breaking. The following morning the news was devastating and the decision had to be made to cancel the ball.
Tonight I sit and reflect on the fact that this year our Ball is going ahead however so many families still not home, still recovering from what happened and i send out Love and hope for a Safe and Happy future.
Those attending the Ball tomorrow I hope to create yet again a memorable event at this years Christmas Ball x
From me and my team it has been a Dream.
This years Fairy days have been so filled with smiles and positive feedback that it makes all the time and effort worthwhile.I have so many people to Thank who continue to support me and reassure me when skies are grey and they are right because everything is always great on the day.You the public make that happen by attending and supporting local traders and bringing along your own imagination.
It does however lead me to Thank Bernadette and Johnathon from Highhead for allowing us to return year after year flying around their valley where it all began.Unfortunately we will no longer be flying around the Valley sprinkling sparkles everywhere however our main Cumbrian Fairy Day will continue and info will be made available soon for you all.
So we started in May with our Super Sunny day in the stunning location of Kirklinton Hall and Gardens .Here the children got to make flower crown ,decorate unicorns and dragons along with dragon adoption.Pixie creations brought along their maypole and music makers ran some amazing workshops.Dancing on the lawn with Maddison entertainment was joined by Jason the Juggling jester. Many took time out to wander through the glen in search of the resident fairies and fairy shopping was enjoyed by all.
Our Main Cumbrian Fairy Day was bursting with Magic and an array of activities to take part in for free lets make next years just as Sparkly. From squirting paint to banging on drums boys and girls were glowing with smiles, their minds full of imagination as they joined the fairies to decorate toadstolls and visted the Gnome Zone to meet our chief elf.The day was finished with a super parade of colour, music and fairy dust.
Relax Kids Classes returning to Hazeldean this September on Thursday evening 4.15pm-5.15pm .Each week we will go on a new adventure engaging both boys and girls aged 4 and over.
On the 1st September I am running Back to School with Relax Kids sessions throughout the day ,these are now filling up.
